The Mystical Narmada: Source of World's Oldest Living Cultural Legacy
Narmada is the only holy river in the world to be circumambulated on foot by devotees, pilgrims, seekers, saints, sages, ascetics, mystics and yogis alike. The spiritual environment along the banks of Narmada is favoured for practising penance and austerities for karmic cleansing and spiritual upliftment. The written and oral tradition of India is replete with countless tales of mystical stories associated with spiritual life along the river Narmada, ascertaining its legacy as the oldest recorded and alive spiritual ecosystem on earth, that is today epitome of India's cultural heritage and world's oldest living cultural legacy.
Our Last Chance to Conserve World's Oldest Spiritual Heritage
Once abundant with lakhs of teerth sthals, the number of these ancient sacred sites by the banks of Narmada has dwindled to less than 450 in trace today. Many of them are in urgent need of restoration. Some are barely managed by lone sages or handful of devoted villagers. Some are completely unmanned, neglected and lost in signficance. Few have been submerged underwater or washed away by the great floods of 1968 & 1970. While others have drowned due to various dams and other infrastructure projects over the Narmada river. Before the number of teerth sthals dwindle any further, we must take timely action to conserve these sacred sites of enormous importance in India's spiritual heritage, and ensure this legacy of Narmada is preserved for the sake of future generations to come.
